Greetings from Ambassador
2022/4/25

I am FUKUSHIMA Kayoko. Upon my arrival in Barbados I would like to share my message. It is a great honour as well as a pleasure to serve as Ambassador of Japan to this beautiful country.
Japan recognised Barbados upon its independence in 1966. In 1967 diplomatic relations between both countries were established. Since then, Japan and Barbados have been developing friendly relations. The Japanese Embassy was established in Barbados in 2016, and my predecessor, Ambassador SHINADA Teruhiko, became the first resident Ambassador. In 2019 the then Governor General, H.E. the Most Hon. Dame Sandra Prunella Mason, visited Japan to attend the Ceremony of Accession of His Majesty the Emperor of Japan. Under the strong leadership of Prime Minister the Hon. Mia Amor Mottley, a historical step was made when Barbados transitioned to a republic on 30 November 2021.
Our world continues to face various challenges, and it has been increasingly important for Japan and Barbados to strengthen its bilateral relationship as countries with shared fundamental values such as freedom, democracy, and respect for human rights.
Having tourism as its main industry, Barbados has been seriously affected by the COVID-19 pandemic. Due to the challenges faced by small islands in acquiring vaccines, Japan cooperated with other donors to contribute vaccines to Barbados through the COVAX Facility on two occasions last year. Recently, in collaboration with UNDP, Japan started a grant-aid project to support sargassum management capacities in five Caribbean countries including Barbados. The signing ceremony and Exchange of Notes took place in Barbados on 18 February 2022.
In spite of the challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic, exchanges in various fields including sports and culture have been continuing. Last year Barbadian athletes participated in the Tokyo Olympic and Paralympic Games and exhibited excellent performances in the spirit of sportsmanship. Several young Barbadians continue to participate in the Japan Exchange and Teaching (JET) Programme and the Japanese Government (MEXT) Scholarship and are currently enjoying their experiences in Japan.
I would like to do my best to strengthen this wonderful bilateral relationship through enhanced cooperation and exchange. Your kind support and cooperation would be greatly appreciated. We can be reached at tel. +1-246-538-5700 or E-mail: barbados@rt.mofa.go.jp.
