Visa Application for those with family in Japan and other cases (COVID-19)

1. Spouses/Children of Japanese Nationals

A. Short term stay (up to 90 days) applications for passport holders of 68 countries/ regions (i.e. Barbados,UK,USA,CANADA) (*1)

Application method for passport holders of 68 countries/ regions ordinarily subject to visa exemption measures, which are still suspended. If you are not legally married to your partner (defacto), please see 4. Short Term Visas for Family and Acquaintances

  1. Visa application form (Please do not paste the photo as indicated on the form)
  2. One passport-sized photograph approx: 45mmⅹ35mm or 2in x 1.4in (taken witin the last 6 months)
  3. Valid Passport
  4. Copy of applicant's passport photo page
  5. Copy of Japanese relative's passport
  6. Copy of Koseki Tohon (family register)
For a Multiple-Entry Short Stay visa: To apply for a multiple-entry short stay visa (valid for one year) as a spouse or child of a Japanese national registered in their family register, bring the above and:

B. Short term stay (up to 90 days) applications for passport holders of other countries/ regions

  1. Visa application form (Please do not paste the photo as indicated on the form)
  2. One passport-sized photograph approx: 45mmⅹ35mm or 2in x 1.4in (taken witin the last 6 months)
  3. Valid Passport
  4. Copy of passport photo page
  5. Copy of Japanese relation's passport
  6. Proof of income (pay slips, PayG statement, savings statements, supperanuation, work contract etc.)
  7. Koseki Tohon (family register), issued within the last three months *PDF copy is acceptable.
  8. Flight booking confirmation (please do not purchase a ticket until you have received a visa)
  9. Residential Certificate (Jyuminhyo) of Inviter (must be issued within 3 months)   *PDF copy is acceptable.
  10. Letter of Invitation (in English)/Letter of Invitation (in Japanese)     *PDF copy is acceptable.

C. Long term stay (more than 90 days)

a. With a Certificate of Eligibility (CoE)
  1. Visa application form (Please do not paste the photo as indicated on the form)
  2. One passport-sized photograph approx: 45mmⅹ35mm or 2in x 1.4in (taken witin the last 6 months)
  3. Valid Passport
  4. Copy of passport photo page
  5. Certificate of Eligibility
  6. Copy of Certificate of Eligibility
  7. *If your Certificate of Eligibility has expired, please see here for guidelines

B. Without a COE: 

  1. Visa application form (Please do not paste the photo as indicated on the form)
  2. One passport-sized photograph approx: 45mmⅹ35mm or 2in x 1.4in (taken witin the last 6 months)
  3. Valid Passport
  4. Copy of passport photo page
  5. Copy of Japanese relation's passport
  6. Proof of income (pay slips, savings statements, work contract etc.)
  7. A Koseki Tohon (family register), issued within the last three months *PDF copy is acceptable.
  8. Flight booking confirmation (please do not purchase a ticket until you have received a visa)
  9. Residential Certificate (Jyuminhyo) of Inviter (must be issued within 3 months)   *PDF copy is acceptable.
  10. Letter of Guarantee (in English)/Letter of Guarantee (in Japanese)     *PDF copy is acceptable.
  11. Letter of Invitation (in English)/Letter of Invitation (in Japanese)       *PDF copy is acceptable.
  12. Proof of Financial Capability of Guarantor *PDF copy is acceptable.    *PDF copy is acceptable.
  13. Documents must be officially issued by governments such as Income Certificate and Tax Payment showing annual income.

2. Spouses/Children of Permanent Residents

As above, with the following conditions: 
 1.    You can apply for a Spouse visa if you obtain a Certificate of Eligibility (CoE) as a Spouse of Permanent Resident.
 2.   If you have another category’s CoE, you can apply for the visa appropriate to your CoE. You must provide the Residence card (Zairyu Card) or Certificate of Residence of your family member in Japan. 

To apply without a CoE, please prepare documents as above with proof of residence (relation's passport copy, residence card copy and proof of relation such as a birth certificate)

3. Long Term Visas for Spouses/Children of Long-Term Residents

As above, with the following conditions: 
 1. If you have a Certificate of Eligibility (CoE), you can apply for the visa appropriate to your CoE. 
 2. If you don’t have a CoE and you want to stay in Japan for a longer period, please obtain a CoE first.

From June 1st, family of people living in Japan can now apply for a temporary visitor visa using the following documents.

  1. Visa application form (Please do not paste the photo as indicated on the form)
  2. One passport-sized photograph approx: 45mmⅹ35mm or 2in x 1.4in (taken witin the last 6 months)
  3. Valid Passport
  4. Copy of passport photo page
  5. Copy of your relation's passport photo page
  6. Proof of relationship to your relative in Japan (Birth Certificate, Marriage Certificate, Family Register etc.) *PDF copy is acceptable.
  7. Copy of your relation's Japanese residence card if applicable (front and back)
  8. Invitation Letter (Japanese or English) from your relative
  9. Copy of Written Pledge (Japanese or English
Acquaintances of people living in Japan can now apply under the following circumstances: 
  • Visiting your fiancee or defacto partner
  • Attending the wedding, funeral or other significant ceremony of a friend
  • Visiting a sick friend

B. For passport holders of other countries and regions

  • If you do not hold a passport from a country or region ordinarily subject to visa exemption measures, please apply using the following guideline, or contact us.

You may be able to apply for a visa under specific humanitarian circumstances, such as a family emergency (if your family member is not included in the above categories) or medical treatment. Please contact us if you believe this applies to you.
