Important Notice on the Purchase of Used Cars & Car Parts from Japan

2022/4/6
The Embassy of Japan has recently received a large number of inquiries relating to the purchase of used cars from Japan.
The Embassy wishes to advise that it is unable to provide any assistance or guarantee regarding commercial matters of this nature.
In order to avoid the common risks associated with personally-made imports, the Embassy of Japan offers the following tips:
  • If intent on purchasing used cars directly from Japan, Barbadian citizens are advised to seek information on Japanese car dealerships by visiting the website of the Japan Used Motor Vehicle Exporters Association (JUMVEA) at www.jumvea.or.jp. JUMVEA, endorsed by the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry of Japan, is an association of more than 230 members and protects both buyers and suppliers by providing a secure online payment service. Please refer to the JUMVEA Safe Trade policy page for more details.
  • If, after purchasing a used car directly from Japan, an individual encounters difficulty and wants to hire a legal professional for further assistance, it is suggested that the website of “Local Bar Associations, Legal Info & Services of the Japan Federation of Bar Associations” be consulted at https://www.nichibenren.or.jp/en/legalinfo/legal.html.
The English website is available for the following Bar Associations:
